Navigating faith and sexuality

I can’t say for certain that embracing my sexuality brought me closer to God, but I do know that if I hadn’t, I would never want to be closer to him. And I may not go to mass every Sunday, but when I do, it's more special walking in without feeling weights dragging me down.

Speaking and reading in a language is a privilege, one that I hadn’t acknowledged until now. So when I started reading more in Spanish, it no longer felt like a chore. It felt like every time I did, I was making my mother and Aya proud.

As I stand on the cusp of my third year, I reflect on my evolution from gang loyalty to academic pursuit. This isn’t just my redemption — it’s a testament to the unyielding power of transformation.

Shortly before leaving for college, I cut off my hair, replaced all my clothes and began going by a gender-neutral variant of my given name. I was unprepared for the transitions that would follow.

To my dismay, I realized the politics in Spain are just as polarized as those in the United States. But because I was traveling in a country with a longer history, I could connect to a time and place free of conflict.

My parents always supported my journey as a baseball player, and I am appreciative that they did so. Perhaps if they did not, I would not have had such a passion for baseball. This same passion brings me hope when I see signs indicating more involvement of South Asian representation in American sports.

Despite the lack of recognition, I'm proud of the rich history behind my Arab roots. I’m honored to be so closely related to such accomplished and intelligent individuals.

As the daughter of immigrants, this memory produces conflicting feelings. Now aware of the historical context of imperialism and appropriation that my heritage country has suffered, is it not okay for my non-Indian friends to wear my clothes as costumes?
