Though life in America for international students may not be perfect, an appreciation for all the country offers through its people, culture and opportunities should never be overlooked. Gratitude does not mean ignorance of the pervasive problems facing international students but emphasizes what has been and can be accomplished for those traveling thousands of miles to America’s lecture halls.

As I stand on the cusp of my third year, I reflect on my evolution from gang loyalty to academic pursuit. This isn’t just my redemption — it’s a testament to the unyielding power of transformation.

The single most important lesson I learned from growing up religious was that it is often easier to follow the belief system you are born into than to risk losing it. We inherit generational biases, prejudices and traumas because we absorb our predecessors' beliefs, politics and worldviews.
